What is alcohol use disorder?
Alcohol use disorder is a pattern of drinking that involves difficulty controlling alcohol consumption, preoccupation with drinking, and significant negative consequences due to continued use. If your drinking leads to ongoing distress and disrupts your daily life, you may have alcohol use disorder. It can range from mild to severe, but even a mild case can worsen and result in serious issues. Seeking treatment early is crucial, as chronic alcohol use can lead to severe health risks such as liver damage, heart problems, bone issues, diabetes complications, and more. Many individuals with long-term alcohol use experience irreversible liver damage, known as cirrhosis.

Vivitrol, an extended-release form of naltrexone, works by blocking the brain’s ability to experience the pleasurable effects of drugs and alcohol. Over time, this helps to reset the brain’s expectation of pleasure from substance use. Available as both an injectable and tablet, naltrexone has been shown to be effective in preventing relapse, reducing cravings, and curbing substance use urges, particularly in the early stages of addiction recovery.
